welcome to EAGLEWINGS' HOMEPAGE ELECTRIC

THIS PAGE IS DEDICATED TO MY TEACHER JIMI HENDRIX

Welcome.! My Name is Jimmie. I'm 44 years old and I'm from the New Haven area of CT. I have a three piece band "SUNRYZ". With the help of Bass Player Paul Puglisi, and Drummer Matt McCoy we team up and bring the music of Jimi Hendrix onto the stage and to the ears of our audience.
"SUNRYZ" was three years in developement, and though we're a local band we take very seriously our effort in bringing the Spirit of Jimi Hendrix into the room when we play. I studied Jimi and his playing for most of my life. This is the unveiling of "SUNRYZ", though our 'prototype'
efforts proved successfull. I knew , when I first heard Jimis' music, back when I was a Pup, that he was ahead of his time and I quickly tucked away the Beatles and followed in Jimis' shadow as best I could. Since my initial exposure to Jimi's music was from the album "Axis,Bold As Love",
I do tend to lean more towards playing the melodic,dream-weaving songs like 'Catles made of Sand', and 'Little Wing' but I have the passion for the Woodstock sound. I could turn up all the way and click on the Uni-Vibe and play an hours' worth of 'Star Spangled Banner',Jam back at the
House' and basically just jam to that groove. I loved that relaxed, yet intense, ever-so-electric slightly out-a tune Woodstock/Outdoor Concert stuff. There's a point in my playing where something very spiritual happens. After a short time playing a couple of Jimi's songs an intense energy
enters my body and my surroundings fog over, no it's not drugs, and I begin to play Realy, Really, Well. I say that this is when "Jimi steps in". I owe alot to so many people just for allowing me to play. Jimi, obviously, for teaching me(I never could stand lessons or books), Mary,my wife
for tollerating this eccentric, rebell, rocking husband of hers. She's given me total support in my efforts and her only regret is the same one as mine,....That I have'nt been able to go further with my band, & the music. I do compose original music as well, some ala' Hendrix and some other
that I refer to as 'Soundtrack Music'.I'll explain more about this below. It,s new music. And it's good.
So "SUNRYZ" at the time of this writting 2/16/99 , is about a month away from making 'the scene' in the New Haven, CT area. We hope all the Hendrix fans will welcome us. We're by no means a 'tribute' band in that I obviously don't resemble Jimi Hendrix, but we do dress in the spirit ,style
and fashion of the era in which Jimi walked here on the Earth. If you get the "EXPERIENCE HENDRIX" Magazine, I'm in the Premier issue on page 25 regarding the 'Jimi Hendrix Electric guitar Competition' in 10/96. Al Hendrix, Jimi's Dad was there at Mama-Kins in Boston MA., and graced my Fender
Strat Plus with his signature."DIG"

WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO PLAY YOUR STRAT UPSIDE DOWN?
I was curious about the fact that Jimi had to play his guitars, mainly his famous and favorite White Stratocaster, upside down. Since Jimi was left-handed and the 'Mirror-Image' Lefty Strats. didn't appear untill the mid 80's or so, Jimi took the strat. had it re-nuted ( the little carbon or plastic piece where the strings sit nicely at the top of the neck of the guitar),
and proceded to re-string the Strat. upside-down. Well. I had to find out for myself what playing the Fender Strat. upside down must be like. So once upon a time I wandered into a local music store and there on the wall was the guitar you see in this photo,...a 1968 2nd -hand ,white,left-handed,re-issue Fender Stratocaster. As luck would have it and upon further inspection, I did notice
that someone had taken this 'Lefty' Strat,.and re-strung it upside down,...to be played right handed. Soon enough the white Strat. drove me home and showed me the do's and don'ts of playing a Fender Stratocaster upside-down. As it turned out there was very little to the adjustment process. Anyone thinking of trying this, first of all, the "Experience Hendrix" Estate has released
a Jimi 'tribute' Strat. that pretty-much matches the description of the one you see here. The 'Jimi Hendrix 'Strat. is a limmited edition re-creation of the white Stratocaster that Jimi played at Woodstock 1969.
There are two things to check before you go ahead and play a Strat. upside-down. 1.) The low-cut horn is on the wrong side. In other words, the portion of the body that was designed to allow you to comfortably reach those high notes?,..It's on the wrong side. I got past this by learning to tuck my pinky finger behind the body of the guitar allowing me to reach the high registers
comfortably with the remaining three fingers. 2.) You might want to ask for a tremelo arm from a 'Righty'Strat. Otherwise, the bend is backwards and it's hovering over the strings. Jimi used to bend his tremelo bars by hand. Some of you may recall how much thiner they were untill the mid 80's. So just thread in a tremelo arm from a 'Righty'Strat and it'll be right where it belongs.
Speaking of those older, thinner tremelo arms,...how many did YOU snap off. My God, what a nightmare, especially for an 18 year old with no funds available for repairs. I'm just glad they thickened 'em up.
Also for those of you familiar with the two basic 'secret weapons' Jimi used,..The Uni-Vibe and the "Octavia'. Because Jimi plugged his guitar into the original Unicord Uni-Vibe, there are about ten companies manufacturing good and bad replications on the Uni-Vibe Jimi used. If you're not familier with the unit, listen to Jimis' Star Spangled Banner from Woodstock, and Machine Gun,
from the Band of Gypsies CD. The pulsing, erie, chorus effect with the 'heartbeat' signature was initialy the first attempt to re-ceate(for electronic organs), the rotating speaker effect. The two effects on the unit are standard ,.Chorus(the machine gun effect) and Vibrato which if you're not familiar , Jimi used the Vibrato effect of the Uni-Vibe on the song"Hey Baby". An erie
pitch wavering effect that goes well in the pick-up switch selecter position for between the bridge and middle Strat pickups. There are shoe-vibes,chair-vibes, and a whole slew of mass-produced vibes out there. The ones you see in the cataloges and at your local music store. If you really don't care and have a "That's close enough"frame of mind, then it really doesn't matter..BUT ,.
If You Want A Unit That Was Built To The Exact Specifications As Jimi's Uni-Vibe, I can suggest three manufacturers. I have all three of these units and they are excellent.Subtle personality differences in them but these are "JIMI" Uni-Vibes. Here they are 1.) Prescription Electronics "Vibe-Unit" / 2.)Fulltones' "Deja-Vibe" / and 3.) Sweetsound Electronics inc."Ultra-Vibe"..
Remember the high octave solo in the original "Purple Haze"? That was Jimi's 'Octavia'.These manufacturers have duplicate, well-made versions of this pedal also. Just get on the WEB and search. "Now if you will excuse me , I really must kiss the sky".
